Callum bets the result: 1X2, Asian handicaps, double chance and draw no bet. It is the most heavily traded market in football, which means it is the hardest to beat and the one where discipline matters most.

His rule is simple. Write down your own probability for each outcome before you look at a price. If the bookmaker agrees with you, there is no bet. His edges come from things the market is slow to price: fixture congestion, a manager change, a key absence buried in a press conference, and the gap between a team's results and its underlying performance.

He prefers handicaps to outright wins because a handicap lets him back a view about the margin, not just the outcome, and the draw is covered or excluded on his terms.

Price it before you see it

I give each outcome a probability from a team-strength rating, the home advantage for that specific club, and the underlying numbers behind recent results. Only then do I look at the market. The comparison is the tip; the fixture is just the excuse.

Find what the market is slow on

Prices are efficient on reputation and form tables. They are slower on fixture congestion, a side that has played twice in four days, a manager sacked on Monday, or a defensive midfielder who is out but was never a headline name.

Choose the line, not just the side

If I fancy a favourite, the question is whether -0.5, -1 or -1.5 gives the best edge. If I fancy an underdog, +0.5 or double chance may be better than the outright price. The handicap markets are where the value usually sits.

Respect the market's moves

If a price moves sharply against my view before kick-off, I want to know why before I publish. Sometimes the market knows something I do not.
