Italy vs Belgium Prediction and Tips: Match Result
Callum Reid prices Italy's first night under a returning Roberto Mancini against Belgium's World Cup quarter-finalists, then compares the 1X2, handicap and draw-no-bet lines.
The prediction is at the end of the analysis ↓Two new managers, a 34-man squad and the gap between results and performances
Two things happened to these teams over the summer and only one of them looks properly priced. Belgium spent June and July at the World Cup and reached the quarter-finals. Italy spent it at home, having drawn 1-1 with Bosnia-Herzegovina in a March play-off and lost the shootout 4-1. That is a third consecutive World Cup missed. Both squads then went quiet, and both have since changed manager.
Start with Italy's results, because they flatter. The last two were 1-0 wins away at Luxembourg and Greece under caretaker Silvio Baldini. Two wins, two clean sheets, and underneath them 25 shots across the pair with six on target, 51.9 per cent possession in Luxembourg, 42.4 in Greece, and a red card in Athens. Go back further and the pattern holds in reverse: the eye-catching volume — 28 shots in Moldova, 24 in Estonia, 19 against Northern Ireland — came against sides Italy were expected to bury. The one strong team they met twice was Norway, who won 3-0 in Oslo and then 4-1 in Italy. Germany also won 2-1 in Italy in the March 2025 Nations League quarter-final. Against weak visitors Italy's home record is excellent; against the two good ones they have played this cycle it is two matches, two defeats, six goals conceded.
Belgium are the mirror image — results that read worse than the performances behind them. A 1-1 with Egypt and a goalless draw with Iran look ordinary until you see 15 and 23 shots. Across six World Cup matches they had 112 shots with 34 on target. They then beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time, won 4-1 away at co-hosts the United States, and lost 2-1 to Spain, who went on to win the tournament and against whom Belgium were the only side to score in the whole competition. Widen the frame and Belgium have one defeat in fourteen internationals: eight wins, five draws, and Spain.
Home advantage is real and it belongs in any honest rating, but it is worth something like a third of a goal, not a whole tier of quality. It does not on its own convert the weaker side into a clear favourite, and this particular Italy team has not converted it against anyone of substance in two years.
Then the dugouts, which is where the market has the most work to do. Roberto Mancini returned on 28 July, after Gennaro Gattuso was dismissed on 3 April and Baldini bridged the gap. This is Mancini's first match of his second spell, and Italy have not played since 7 June, 110 days ago. He has named 34 players, nine of them uncapped. Mark van Bommel is new to Belgium too, appointed this year once Rudi Garcia's contract expired with the World Cup, but he inherits a group that played six competitive matches together in June and July and lost one of them. One manager is auditioning a squad; the other is picking one.
None of this says Italy are a bad side. It says the market has priced the shirt and the venue rather than the two teams, and that the cleanest way to take the other side of that is to strip the draw out of the equation and back Belgium on the draw-no-bet line.

Team news
Roberto Mancini has named a 34-man Italy squad for this window with nine uncapped players in it. Bryan Cristante has been withdrawn and replaced by Samuele Ricci, and Federico Dimarco left the camp with an injury picked up at Inter, with Aston Villa's Matteo Ruggeri called up in his place. That is per the FIGC's own announcement.
Belgium's team news should be treated as unconfirmed. The Royal Belgian FA's squad page would not load in this session and we have not found a reliable report of a significant absence, so we are not claiming either that someone is missing or that Mark van Bommel has everyone available. No referee appointment and no UK broadcaster were confirmed at the time of writing.
Italy won the most recent meeting between these sides 1-0 in the 2024-25 Nations League, and a full Stadio Olimpico on Mancini's first night back is exactly the sort of occasion a proud team raises itself for. Belgium also have a brand-new manager and no competitive football since 10 July, so the settled-group argument may be worth less than I have made of it.
Verdict
Unibet go 2.08 Italy, 3.50 the draw, 3.30 Belgium. Take the 107 per cent book out of that and it is Italy 44.9 per cent, the draw 26.7 and Belgium 28.3. My own numbers, written down before I looked at a price: Italy 39, draw 28, Belgium 33. So I have the draw within about a point of the market and the two teams the wrong way round by five or six points.
Now the line, which matters as much as the side. Belgium outright at 3.30 is 30.3 per cent against my 33 — the biggest edge available, and also the most fragile, because it rests on a draw estimate I hold loosely. Double chance X2 is 1.66, while the identical outcome dressed up as Belgium +0.5 is 1.70, so anyone taking the double chance here is handing back a tick for nothing. Belgium +1 at 1.35 implies 74.1 per cent and is too heavily taxed to be worth the protection. Draw no bet at 2.35 implies 42.6 per cent; my conditional number is 33 divided by 33 plus 39, which is 45.8. That is roughly seven and a half per cent of value, and unlike the outright it survives me being wrong about how often these two draw.
One unit, confidence three rather than four, for an honest reason: I have a single price snapshot rather than a week of market drift, so I cannot tell you whether money has already started arriving for Belgium. Break-even on my number is about 2.18, so the argument still stands at 2.20 and stops standing below it.
