Ukraine vs Hungary Prediction and Tips: Goals

Tom Ashworth looks at two sides who have gone quiet in front of goal since they last met, and at what that means for the total.

The prediction is at the end of the analysis ↓

Two attacks that have dried up

Ukraine and Hungary met eight days ago in Budapest and it was a tight, low-event game: Ukraine won 1-0, their only goal of the last three Nations League matches they have played. Since then they drew 0-0 away at Georgia and were beaten 3-0 at home — at their neutral Slovak venue — by an in-form Northern Ireland. Across those three games Ukraine have scored once and conceded three.

Hungary's attack has gone just as quiet. After losing 0-1 to Ukraine they drew 0-0 away at Northern Ireland, then beat Georgia 1-0 at home on 2 October. That is one goal scored and one conceded across their own last three fixtures. Adding the two sides' match totals together — 1, 0 and 3 for Ukraine's games, 1, 0 and 1 for Hungary's — the matches both have been involved in this cycle have produced only six goals across six games.

Northern Ireland's 3-0 win over Ukraine is the outlier in that sample and is worth a note of caution: it shows Ukraine's defence can be opened up by a side playing with intent. But Hungary have not shown anything like that attacking threat recently, managing a single goal in each of their last two matches, and neither side arrives with confirmed team news that would change the picture.

With both attacks misfiring and the only previous meeting this cycle finishing 1-0, the appeal is in backing the total to stay low: under 2.5 goals at 1.76.

Team news

No starting line-up is confirmed three days out for either side and we have not found any reported injuries or suspensions. The pick is built on recent scoring patterns, not a confirmed XI.

The risk

Ukraine's defence looked shaky in their last outing, beaten 3-0 by an in-form Northern Ireland; if that continues here against a Hungary side who had scored in three of their four previous internationals before this quiet run, the goals could arrive from an unexpected source. Neither side has direct promotion on the line yet, which can cut tempo either way.

Verdict

Under 2.5 goals at 1.76 implies a 56.8% chance. Given both sides have scored just once apiece across their last three games, and their only meeting this cycle produced a single goal, that looks like a reasonable price rather than an obvious steal — backed mainly by how consistently quiet both attacks have been.
