Norway vs Denmark Prediction and Tips: Player Shots

Hannah Weir works through Norway's shot distribution from the World Cup, what Denmark have actually conceded since October, and how the player shot lines have been priced.

The prediction is at the end of the analysis ↓

Norway's shot distribution and a Denmark side idle since March

Start with the team sheet, because everything else depends on it. Erling Haaland started five of Norway's six matches at the World Cup this summer, against Iraq, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Brazil and England, and was an unused substitute in the sixth, the 4-1 defeat by France on 26 June. That is the caveat worth holding on to: Norway were willing to leave him out of a tournament match entirely when the situation allowed it. Norway's squad for this window had not been published in a readable form on fotball.no at the time of writing, so his selection here is expected rather than confirmed, and anyone taking a player prop should check the line-up before kick-off.

Volume next, and the volume is emphatic. In those five starts Haaland took 20 shots and put 13 on target: four against Iraq, three against Senegal, two against the Ivory Coast, three against Brazil and one against England. That is four shots and 2.6 on target per start. More usefully, Norway as a team registered 25 shots on target across the same five matches, so Haaland accounted for 52 per cent of everything his side got on goal. Very few forwards anywhere carry that share of a team's attacking output.

The opposite pull comes from two friendlies. Haaland started the goalless draw with Switzerland on 31 March and the 1-1 in Morocco on 7 June and finished both with no shot on target at all, one attempt in total across the pair. ESPN's public data does not carry minutes for those matches, so I cannot show how long he was on the pitch, and in Morocco Norway managed only two shots on target as a team, so it was a flat night for the whole side rather than a Haaland problem. Those two zeroes still sit in the average, and they are part of why the price looks the way it does.

Now the match-up, which is the genuine argument against. Denmark have conceded 23 shots on target in their last eight matches, 2.88 a game, keeping three of those opponents to two or fewer. That is a low number, and if it held here a single forward hitting two on target would be taking most of the away side's concessions on his own. The qualification is who Denmark played. Six of the eight were Belarus twice, Greece, North Macedonia, Congo DR and Ukraine. Against the two proper sides in the sample, Scotland in November and Czechia in the World Cup play-off final in March, they gave up five and four. Norway at Ullevaal belong in the second group, not the first.

Denmark also arrive cold in a way Norway do not. Their last competitive fixture was that play-off on 31 March, a 2-2 draw lost 3-1 on penalties, which kept them out of the World Cup altogether. Since then they have played two June friendlies and nothing else. Norway spent the summer playing six tournament matches and went out to England after extra time on 11 July. Sharpness in a September opener usually favours the side that has been playing.

Finally the price. Prop lines are built by algorithm from season-long averages, and Haaland's season-long average is being held down by two friendlies in which Norway barely attacked. Use the competitive sample instead and the number moves a long way. Unibet's own team line points the same way: Norway over 4.5 shots on target is 1.41 and over 5.5 is 1.84, which puts their expectation a shade above five. Half of five is two and a half. On that reading, Erling Haaland over 1.5 shots on target at 1.55 is the line worth taking.

Team news

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer named a 24-man squad on 15 September covering this match and the three that follow, with Thomas Jorgensen, Mads Bidstrup, Viktor Bak and Andreas Jungdal listed as possible debutants. The DBU announcement carried no injury or withdrawal news.

Norway's squad for this window was not published in a form I could read on fotball.no, so I am not going to list one. The last Norway starting XI on record, against England on 11 July, was Nyland; Ryerson, Ajer, Heggem, Moller Wolfe; Berge, Patrick Berg, Odegaard; Schjelderup, Haaland, Sorloth. Treat that as a guide and nothing more: it is two months old and this is the first fixture of a new cycle. No referee appointment and no UK broadcaster had been confirmed at the time of writing.

The risk

Haaland's selection has not been confirmed by any squad announcement I could read, and a rest or a late withdrawal after a long summer voids the argument completely. Denmark have also conceded under three shots on target a game across their last eight, so if they sit deep and Norway's attempts come from wide areas rather than through the middle, two on target is a lot to ask of one player.

Verdict

At 1.55 the market gives this a 64.5 per cent chance. My estimate is nearer 70 per cent. The route there: Unibet expect Norway to make a little over five shots on target, Haaland has taken 52 per cent of Norway's shots on target across five competitive starts this year, which puts his own expectation at about 2.6, and a Poisson distribution around 2.6 returns roughly a 73 per cent chance of two or more. Shade that down for the chance that Denmark's back line is better than their fixture list has made it look, and 70 per cent is where I land.

The gap is real but it is not large, and it is worth being honest about how it is built. Weight his two flat friendlies equally with his five World Cup starts and his per-start average falls to 1.86 on target, which on the same maths gives about 55 per cent and makes 1.55 a bad price. I do not weight them equally, because a home Nations League opener against a direct rival is a competitive match and he will be used like one. A reader who disagrees with that judgement should pass on this.

One unit, confidence three. The over 2.5 line at 2.50 is arguably the better-priced version of the same opinion, but shot-on-target volume is at its most predictable around the 1.5 mark, and that is the bet I want.
